Downfield windmill was originally a smock mill on an octagonal brick
base and an octagonal timber tower, but in 1890 the cap and sails were
blown off, and the tower was rebuilt in brick.
It was restored to working order by Nigel Moon, who ran it for some
years, in the 1960s, but has become dilapidated in recent years and has
again been restored by its new owner, who is about to replace the sails.
